New Mexico State Capitol Building
Hotel guests of the Sage Inn are just a short walk away from the distinctive New Mexico State Capitol Building.
The State Capitol Building was built in 1966 in the shape of the Zia sun symbol. The “Roundhouse” replaced the original Capitol Building, the Palace of the Governor’s on the plaza, that was used starting in 1912 when New Mexico became the United State’s 47th state, with Santa Fe as its capitol.
The Roundhouse is used by the state House of Representatives and Senate for legislature sessions that begin on the third Monday of January and last for either 30 or 60 days.
The Roundhouse features:
- House and Senate chambers viewing galleries
- The Rotunda in the center of the building which measures 49 feet in diameter, 60 feet tall, and is inlaid with a turquoise and brass mosaic of the Great Seal
- State Capitol Art Gallery showcasing contemporary masterworks by artists who live and work in New Mexico
- Governor’s Gallery which serves as an outreach facility of the Museum of Fine Arts
